The location for such recognition couldn't be more fitting. It was somewhere in this neck of the woods where Bobby, Donnie and Red pulled their stocks into a track infield and heard another driver remark, "Here comes the Alabama The name stuck, and became one of the most famous on the circuit. At Charlotte, Bobby and Donnie also left more indelible marks on Winston Cup racing. Red's forte was short tracks, and there probably isn't one in the whole state of North Carolina that he hasn't conquered.

Bobby won six big-time races and three at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which since has succumbed to the almighty corporate dollar and been renamed "Lowe's." CLEMENTS, MRS. GRACE ELIZABETH, Mrs. Grace Eliza- these guys are tenacious. These are damned good racers. And I don't think you can just say it's one series or the other.

There's a lot of great guys here. A lot of great guys there too. Bringing them all together only makes it better for everybody." Some on the IRL side feel the CART teams and drivers are showing weakness by coming back to the Brickyard in increasing numbers. Without Indy, the CART series lacks a showcase event. But team owner Roger Penske, a 10-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and owner of the entries driven by defending CART champion Gil The Children's Charity event is one of many side attractions that anually surround the running of the Coca-Cola 600, a Winston Cup race second only in prominence to the Daytona 500.

As if time does stand still, it was at Charlotte Speedway where Donnie Allison completed a famous "double," and where Tony Stewart will attempt to be the first driver to do it back-to-back. Allison raced in the Indianapolis 500 and the World 600 on the same weekend. The difference is that Stewart did it on the same day, and is shooting for a repeat Sunday. To put this feat into to some sort of perpective, when it's around high moon Sunday evening, Stewart, if successful, will have driven 1,100 miles, or traveled approximately 1,698 miles, counting flying from Indianapolis to Charlotte. This total is about the equivalent to driving from Birmingham to Billings, in a single day.

Stewart has done it before, barely, finishing ninth at Indy and an exhausted fourth at Charlotte. DEATHS DEATHS Survivors include her son, Samuel W. Webb, Sr. of Homewood, and her brother, James K. Wilson; and grandchildren.

Graveside services will ANNIVERSARY be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 26th, at Elmwood Cemetery. de Ferran and Helio Castroneves this year, disagrees. "I don't think it gives the IRL any more ammunition because we're here for one race," Penske said. It's just the biggest open-wheel race in the country, if not the world.

"We've had F1 champions come here to race and it shows how big this event is," said Michael Andretti, a CART driver and veteran of 11 Indy 500s. "I think that is why you are seeing it happen." As NASCAR continues to steal ratings and fans from open-wheel This raises the question why NASCAR would allow it since taking a critical hit over safety after Dale Earnhardt's fatal accident at Daytona. This has to be an example of a driver pushing himself to the limit, the possiblity of fatigue causing a wipeout being ever present. Stewart had a close shave last year. He was so fatigued at the end of the Charlotte run that he had to be helped from the car and carried by stretcher to the track care center.

Can NASCAR survive another tragedy, one it could have avoided? Allison knows all about racing pitfalls. He was able to get in the fast lane at Indianapolis by begging legendary driver and car owner A.J. Foyt to "let me drive at Indy." Foyt did, and Allison did. In 1970, this Indy fledgling finished fourth, still the best of any NASCAR driver. He was named the rookie of the race.

To show it was no fluke, Allison returned the next year and was sixth to take the checkered flag. FINCH, MR. FRED, age 89, of Birmingham, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 at a local hospice facility. German, Jr. both of Bessemer, racing, CART and the IRL have talked about working toward compromise on issues in which their stances differ greatly. Progress has been slow. "I have no belief that it's going to come back together," said John Barnes, who owns the car driven by 21-year-old IRL points leader Sam Hornish Jr. "There's no reason for it.

They have a successful racing series. We have a successful racing series. They're like channel 8 and we're channel 6." The cost of building and testing an extra car prevent more CART teams from trying the Indy 500. Scripps Howard News Service "Doing what Tony is doing, I think the problem they have and the one I probably would have had is mental fatigue more than physical fatigue," Allison said. "In an Indy car, you're sitting on the edge all the time.

You know if something goes wrong, and you crash, you're going to break something. "In a stock car, if you do crash, you're pretty sure you're not going to get broken up. "It'll definitely be taxing, as it was for Tony last year. It's going to be tough. Those Indy guys run wide open.

It seems there always is a bad wreck." Of course, Steward will go for the "double," regardless and hope. NASCAR might even be saying a prayer.
