Track 1: I’m a Mess by Ed Sheeran. I choose this song as the theme song for the movie because I think the general idea of the song goes well with parts of the story line from the book. The song is about being a mess both emotionally and physically because of a romantic relationship. I think this idea relates to both Liesel and many other characters in the book very well. Liesel’s relationships with Rudy, Max, Hans, Rosa, and the Mayor's wife can all be connected to this song even though not all of these relationships are romantic. All of these relationships affect Liesel's life in some way, and to an extent make her life “a mess”. I would have this song play in the credits of the movie, because that typically when the theme song plays. Track 2: Darcy’s Letter composed by Dario Marianelli. I would have the piano version of this classical piece of music open the movie. This piece has a very melancholy feel to it, but is also eerily beautiful. I think that this piece would be perfect if the movie opened with Liesel sitting on the train by herself, having flashbacks to when her brother died on the train, and when they went to the funeral. There are parts to the song where the speed picks up and becomes a little bit more intense and angry, this would be a good time to have a flashback to Liesel’s brother dying. Towards the end of the song the music picks up and has a happier feel to it, this could be the moment when Liesel arrives at the Hubermanns house. Track 3: Nightingale by D...
